Got Spirit?

Ending Homecoming and Spirit Week has been a happy/sad emotion for us all.  We love the excitement and energy surrounding the event and yet...it's nice to be back to normal too!

At a Christian School the cheer "We've got spirit, yes we do, we've got spirit, how 'bout you?" takes on a whole new meaning!  It is vital that since we are a Christian school and claim to walk in the Spirit, that there is a marked difference in our students, players, coaches and even fans.

I know that for our family when we transferred Ben here in the middle of third grade one of the biggest differences he noticed was the "Y" team of Lincoln Christian boys he played with and the coach (an LCS dad) - for the first time, they were praying before a game and talking about sportsmanship more than winning.  I think it frustrated him at first because he likes to WIN...but over the years, he has gained Godly perspective on how a believer filled with the Spirit looks and acts, even in the midst of sports. Does this mean our coaches are perfect - no...I realize they are not, but what an encouragement to know that the Spirit is in them and guiding them in the coaching they have been called to do.

The "Doing Sports Gods Way" training that our coaches embrace reminds us that we aren't playing for ourselves or our school - but for HIM.  If you haven't heard about this program, you can learn more about it at http://doingsportsgodsway.com/www.doingsportsgodsway.com/Welcome.html or ask our AD, Matt Farup for more information.

In the light of what has happened this week with our Husker coach and team - this is a great time to reflect on our own hearts and actions - in the stands, in the office, in the line at WalMart (ouch!) behind the wheel of our car, and one of my personal "testings" spots....my phone service center. Isn't it hard sometimes to control our human impulses and filter our reactions and words through the Spirit?  That is my challenge to myself this week, and I invite you to join me in that challenge too. Let's rely on the Spirit of power and love that is within us.
